Pearl Reports & Services Details

The GIA Pearl Identification Report details the quantity, weight, size, shape, color, overtone, identity (natural or cultured,), mollusk, when determinable, environment (saltwater or freshwater), and any detectable treatments.

Submission Criteria

• Loose, mounted or strung pearls
• ​Sautoir/Meshlah: Traditional long necklaces (usually multiple strands) that suspends a tassel or other ornament, approval required.
• Hanks/Bunches: Multiple strands (usually 10 or more) tied together in one hank or bunch, usually between 16 to 20 inches, can be either uniform or graduated in size, approval required.

The GIA Pearl Identification & Classification Report includes all Identification Report information as well as identification and classifications for luster, surface, and matching (if applicable).

• Loose, mounted, or strung untreated nacreous pearls

The GIA Cultured Pearl Classification Report Includes a detailed classification of cultured pearl(s) based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value Factors™ (size, shape, color, luster, surface, nacre and matching).

Submission Criteria

• Loose, mounted, strung or in a fixed design layout for a strand or jewelry item
• Jewelry Suite (Maximum 2 items per report. Example: a pair of earrings and necklace). Must be same species and matching in quality in terms of grade.

Expedite the service time of select pearl services. Turnaround time is 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays).

Service Restrictions
By appointment only. Contact your Client Services Representative for details. Certain submissions may require a longer turnaround service time.

A comment regarding the calculation of average nacre thickness will be shown in the comments section of the Pearl Identification or Pearl Identification & Classification Report.

Submission Criteria

• Bead cultured pearls only

Convert your current GIA pearl report from a Pearl Identification report to a Pearl Identification & Classification report. The pearl(s) will be analyzed, and a new report will be issued. The old report will not be returned.

• Pearl(s) and the original report must be submitted within 60 days of the original report date. After 60 days, must be resubmitted under pearl report service.

Service Restrictions
Pearls must be in the same order. Only applicable for certain types of pearls.

To confirm your pearl’s identification and/or classification results, resubmit the pearl along with its original GIA report. The pearl will go through the identification process and a new report will be issued. The old report will not be returned. Update service can accompany Add-On services where a re-evaluation of the pearl is required prior to performing the Add-On service.

The GIA Monograph is a customized gemological report designed to showcase and celebrate exceptional pearls. Each monograph comes complete with photographs, detailed identification and classification information, spectroscopic analysis, historical background and other supporting content. The monograph tells the complete story of the pearl and is presented within a handmade box inscribed with the pearl’s name. Included is a USB drive with the digital copy of the pearl’s story.

Packaged in a hard-bound portfolio, the GIA Portrait Report sets out all the data that supports the conclusions reached in a Pearl Identification or Pearl Identification & Classification Report.

The Notable Letter accompanies a GIA report and details the attributes of especially noteworthy or unique pearls. The letter includes a photo and comments on the gemological properties such as color, size, and features such as the producing mollusk (if possible) that make the pearl(s) unique.

GIA gemologists will visit your business or home to provide an on-site gemological consultation. The gemological advice given may or may not involve the examination of actual pearls. Seven days advance notice required. A written report on the outcome of the consultation will be available within one week of the visit.

Evaluates pearls and sorts them based on pre-specified test criteria. Pearls that pass receive a Pearl Identification Report or Pearl Identification & Classification Report and are charged accordingly. Pearls that do not pass the test criteria are returned without a report and charged a nominal fee.
