Somehow I do not think the person who posted the original comment is going to reply.
Rest assured that my comment was not meant to be negative about your site - I just wanted to explain that I am not involved in the site and do not visit it usually.

Hi Acid_Test

Someone pointed me to your comment and asked for a response.
I wrote some lines in my blog, see http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/about/#comment-12412 if you are interested.
Feel free to answer there, not here, because this will be my only post on this site. I have no interest in pearlin.info and will not check the place for updates.

Tried using Kword lately Alien Bob?
How about that Kpackage program?

The general consensus is that you release the software as it was intended to be released, unmodified. But that is a lie as you rewrite stuff to not include PAM. KNetworkManager is missing too which is a major component of KDE. You can build it without PAM or Gnome just so you know.

See it looks as if you are following Shuttleworth's lead, release, release, release.... Even broken just release.

Point is 13 pissed people off. You "hear" a lot about stability but KDE 4.2 wasn't stable now was it? And neither is 4.3, 4.4 or even 4.5. Vista took a long time for Microsoft to get out because they completely rewrote it (6 years). 7 is just a continuation on Vista. No they aren't rewriting much anymore. Takes about 10 years to get something cooked well done.

Redhat still includes KDE 3.5.4 because, "IT'S STABLE". Yes it's stable. And good golly Mrs. Molly they still use 2.6.18's kernel.

Why don't you put the multilib support into extra?

So given slackware 12.2 (32bit), it's kernel can be recompiled with PAE enabled which will give you up to 64GB of ram. I'd recomend any serious takers to stick to that.

Hi Linu,

Thanks for that! It is working.

My next problem is that I cannot get 'map to guest' to work through windows 7. It just keeps popping up with the 'enter network password' box.

Any ideas?

[global]
        netbios name = BOBBY
        guest account = nobody
        server string = Nigel's File Server
        workgroup = WORKGROUP
        os level = 20
        map to guest = bad user
        encrypt passwords = yes
        security = user

Cheers.

Hi nigel,

Thank you for your response.
Anyway I will provide you the solution

========

Only the owner can rename, delete or edit an item.
-------------------------------
[ShareName]
path = /path_to/shared_directory
read only = no
--------------------------------
Permissions: drwxrwx--T (chmod 1770)
Owner : a normal Linux user
Access : Samba user database only
Comment : set sticky bit & permissions thus:
sudo chmod 1770 /path_to/shared_directory

The Restricted Delete Bit, or "sticky" bit (represented by T in drwxrwx--T) prevents users other than the owner from deleting files or directories inside the shared_directory. In this share, the owner has full create/delete/rename/edit rights to files and directories created by the owner, but other network users have read-only rights to files and directories that they don't own.
========
Let me know it works for you

sincerly

Hi, great article. I was wondering how I can implement 'sticky bits' into a samba share so that only the user that creates the file can delete it.

I am fairly new to linux and very new to samba. I am running ubuntu server.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,
Nigel.
